Abel Mejia, a student at Indiana Bible College, tragically passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2024. Abel died in a car accident while visiting the Grand Canyon. His sudden loss has deeply saddened many, and he will be greatly missed.
Abel was known for his warm smile and gentle spirit, qualities that will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He is the brother of Josh, a recent Indiana Bible College graduate who has visited Turning Point on several occasions.

Grand Canyon National Park Report
On Wednesday, July 31, the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a report of a visitor who fell from the rim approximately ¼ mile west of Pipe Creek Overlook. Responding rangers found the body of Abel Joseph Mejia, 20, of Hickory, North Carolina, 400 ft. below the rim. Abel was near the edge of the rim when he suffered an accidental fall. The National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the incident.
Grand Canyon National Park staff encourage all visitors to stay on designated trails and walkways, maintain a safe distance of at least six feet (2 m) from the edge of the rim, and stay behind railings and fences at overlooks to ensure a safe visit.
