A Woman Was Incarcerated In Whiston For Causing Death Through Reckless Driving: A woman who caused the death of a 61-year-old male in Wistaston by hazardous driving has been jailed for 50 months. Ognewair Shittu, 39, of Ruskin Road, Crewe, appeared at Chester Crown Court today (September 4) after pleading guilty to causing death by hazardous driving. Shittu was driving a green BMW along Nantwich Road, Whistaston, when he collided with Stephen Ray from Crewe at 10.10am on Friday, February 9. Stephen crossed the road and waited at the central shelter island, plainly marked by two fluorescent beacons.
The BMW was observed on CCTV travelling towards Crewe when it made a perceptible movement off the road and towards the central island. He proceeded to stroll down the island and encountered Stephen during his journey. No evidence of the BMW’s brake lights being activated is visible in the CCTV footage. Stephen received immediate assistance from members of the community. He sustained numerous injuries and was subsequently declared deceased at the hospital. At the site, Shitu was apprehended. He successfully completed a roadside fitness assessment and a substance and alcohol screening.
During an interview, he refrained from providing the defence with information regarding the circumstances of the collision. He stated that the road was well-known to him and that there were no distractions in the vehicle. He was discovered to be operating a vehicle without a valid licence, with only a provisional UK licence from 2022, and no insurance. Shittu will be prohibited from operating a motor vehicle for a period of five years, in addition to the prison sentence. Subsequently, he will be required to complete an extended driver’s license. “Stephen was a much-loved son and nephew,” stated Stephen Ray’s family in the aftermath of his sentencing.
“We are overjoyed that this protracted procedure has concluded.” However, no amount of punishment will be able to bring Stephen back to us, despite the fact that someone was culpable for his demise. Sergeant Andrew Dennison further stated, “It is imperative to recognise that driving is a privilege, not a right, and there is no justification for failing to pay full attention to the road when operating a vehicle.” “Despite the fact that Shittu is currently incarcerated for this offence, nothing can bring Stephen back, and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.” “I hope that this tragic event will serve as a reminder of the sudden and devastating repercussions of careless driving, as this collision could have been easily prevented.”
