Greg Barnes Obituary, Death – On Good Friday, March 29, 2024, friends, family, and the community at large will gather at the Heritage Trail Bible Church in McKinley to honor the life and legacy of Greg Barnes, a cherished son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. Greg, who passed away peacefully at his home on March 20, 2024, leaves behind a profound impact on those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Greg’s journey began on September 26, 1964, on an Air Force Base in Okinawa, Japan, where he was born to Albert Ellis and Phyllis Eileen Barnes. Growing up in a military family took him to various corners of the globe until they settled in Rapid City, South Dakota. It was here that Greg’s passion for music blossomed. He graduated from Rapid City Central before pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in music education at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota.
During his time at Concordia, Greg lent his voice to the renowned Concordia Choir, enriching audiences with his musical talent. In 1987, Greg ventured to Northern Minnesota, where he embarked on a remarkable 34-year career as an elementary music teacher and high school choral director. His dedication to his students extended beyond the classroom, as he frequently directed church choirs and organized caroling events at local nursing homes.
Through music, Greg shared his heart with the world, leaving an indelible mark on generations of students and community members alike. While music held a special place in Greg’s life, he found joy in various other pursuits. Whether he was crafting intricate woodworking pieces, mastering the art of grilling, indulging in culinary delights, or quoting lines from his favorite movies and TV shows, Greg lived life with an infectious enthusiasm.
Yet, above all, he was a man of unwavering faith, driven by a desire to spread the love of God to all he encountered. Throughout his 11-year battle with cancer, Greg’s faith remained steadfast, anchored by the promise of Romans 8:28 – the assurance that God works all things together for good. His resilience and optimism inspired all who knew him, serving as a testament to the power of faith in the face of adversity.
