UConn interim head coach Gordon Sammis is expected to be headed to TCU, according to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel Thursday afternoon.
Sammis is expected to serve as the Horned Frogs’ offensive coordinator and play caller, the same role he had with the Huskies under former coach Jim Mora, according to Thamel. He was named UConn’s interim head coach after Mora departed for Colorado State and has been preparing to coach the Huskies in the Fenway Bowl against Army on Dec. 27.
A two-time nominee for the Broyles Award in his two years as UConn’s OC, the highly-respected former offensive line coach led the Huskies to two of the most successful offensive seasons in their history.
“I think he’s brilliant,” Mora said of Sammis in October. “I think he’s incredibly smart, I think he’s incredibly hard-working, he’s got great leadership skills, he cares desperately. He is an absolute rising superstar in the coaching profession. I think he’s fantastic. He’s as good as I’ve been around.”
Why UConn football coach Jim Mora credits this ‘brilliant’ assistant for offensive success
UConn had the No. 12 scoring offense in the FBS at 36.9 points per game over its 9-3 regular season in 2025. The Huskies averaged 460.1 total yards per game, No. 16 nationally, with the No. 6 passing offense (301.1 yards per game) and the No. 68 rushing attack (159 yards per game). UConn had the fewest turnovers in the nation with just one fumble and one interception on the season.
Behind historic efforts from quarterback Joe Faganano, receiver Skyler Bell and running back Cam Edwards, it was the first time UConn ever had a 3,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard receiver and a 1,000-yard rusher in the same season.
Sammis came to UConn to join Mora’s original staff as an offensive line coach and played a large role in developing NFL Draft picks Christian Haynes and Chase Lundt, in addition to Valentin Senn, who signed with the Arizona Cardinals, Chris Fortin, who was the No. 8 overall pick in last year’s CFL Draft, and others.
Sammis will replace Kendal Briles, who was hired as South Carolina’s offensive coordinator on Monday. UConn defensive coordinator Matt Brock also moved on this week to return to Mississippi State.
UConn officially introduced former Toledo coach Jason Candle as its next head coach on Monday, and he is expected to bring multiple members of his staff with him.
