It’s the holiday season! As events are being planned with what dishes we might make and what gathering we might host, keep in mind that your pup might not get your full and undivided attention.
It’s important to know what hazards might be lurking. The American Kennel Club suggests the following tips for a safe holiday season with your dog.
Properly store food. Always be mindful during mealtimes and ensure that all leftovers are put away correctly and out of sight. Any food left behind may tempt your dog to jump up and eat if off the table.
Don’t reward begging behavior. While your pup’s begging eyes may be irresistible, it’s crucial to avoid feeding them your table scraps. While a small piece of turkey without skin may be OK as a treat, many foods are not safe for your dog. Always remind your guests not to give in to your dog’s begging.
Never assume bones are a safe bet. It can be tempting to share a bone off your holiday plate, but it’s best to avoid doing so. Turkey bones are a serious choking hazard and can lead to a trip to the emergency vet.
Take out the garbage. Whatever trash is created from the preparation and eating of a holiday meal, make sure it gets taken care of right away. Avoid your dog rifling through the garbage and finding a risky item, like turkey fat (which can cause pancreatitis in dogs!).
Create a safe environment. If you are hosting a holiday gathering, remember that it can be overwhelming for your dog to be around so many people. Additionally, some guests may be afraid of dogs. To keep everyone in mind, especially your pup, it may be a good idea to keep your dog in their crate or a room that won’t be utilized by your guests.
