CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A man died this week after being struck by a vehicle on Independence Boulevard March 1.
According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, officers responded to a crash in the 7400 block of Independence near Village Lake Drive around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, March 1. When they arrived, an unresponsive pedestrian laying in the roadway, and a 2019 Mercedes Benz Sprinter van occupied by a driver stopped on the right side of the roadway.
The pedestrian, 30-year-old Mauricio Perez-Hernandez was transported by Medic with life-threatening injuries. The van driver, a 71-year-old man, refused treatment.
On March 17, the victim was pronounced dead at Novant Presbyterian.
CMPD’s investigation indicates Perez-Hernandez was allegedly attempting to cross Independence Boulevard outside of a designated crosswalk when he was struck by the van, which had the right-of-way.
Officer says neither speed nor impairment are factors in the collision. Impairment was a contributing factor for Perez-Hernandez.
His next of kin has been notified of his death.
