Born on September 23, 1929, to James Wesley Jolly and Dovie (Bankston) Jolly, Frances grew up in Lynn County, attending Tahoka schools and graduating from Tahoka High School in 1947. In 1948, she married O. W. “Dub” Powers at Hungry Hill near Wilson, Texas. Following his passing in 1981, Frances later married Daniel Thomas from Tahoka, who preceded her in death in 2008.
A dedicated homemaker, Frances found joy in gardening, raising flowers, sewing, and canning vegetables and fruits. Her love for music was expressed through piano playing and singing in the church choir at Sweet Street Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful member for 66 years.
Frances is survived by her daughter, Nina Powers, and her brother, Larry Jolly, with his wife Ellen. She leaves behind a lasting legacy through her four grandchildren: Michele Powers Claborn, Melissa Powers Hosmer, Lex Frazier, and Justin Porter, along with 10 great-grandchildren.
A visitation to honor Frances will be held on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, from 5 PM to 7 PM at Combest Family Funeral Home in Tahoka. Funeral services will take place at 2 PM on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at Sweet Street Baptist Church, with Rev. Donald Webster officiating.
Frances will be laid to rest in Tahoka Cemetery following the service, carried by pallbearers who include Koby Claborn, Kevin Claborn, Brandon Porter, Jordan Porter, Cameron Porter, Mason Frazier, Maklon Frazier, Cade Maybie, and Todd Hosmer. In celebrating Frances Powers Thomas’s life, may we find solace in the memories of a woman whose love, faith, and devotion to family touched the lives of many.
