MONROE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Monroe woman is facing felony charges after allegedly neglecting two cats to the point where they both died, officials say.
Saturday morning, Union County Animal Services deputies opened an animal cruelty investigation on 22-year-old Amorette Smith after learning she allegedly failed to “provide proper care for her two cats, ultimately leading to their deaths.”
Deputies received information that one of Smith’s cats had already died and the other was in such poor health that it had to be euthanized.
During the investigation, it was determined that Smith had failed to supply water while the cats were confined to a bedroom for over a week. Vet specialists confirmed that the main cause of death for both animals was extended water deprivation.
Smith was arrested and charged with two counts of felony killing animals by starvation.
She was booked into the Union County Detention Center under a $5,000 secured bond but has since been released.
The investigation remains ongoing.
