From his humble beginnings in Needles, California, to his years of service in the US Navy during the Korean War, Don’s life was characterized by dedication, love, and a passion for sports and community engagement. Don’s journey began in the small town of Needles, where he spent his formative years. Graduating from Needles High School in 199, he went on to pursue higher education at San Jose State.
However, in 1950, duty called, and Don enlisted in the US Navy, serving on the USS Essex during the Korean War. This period of service marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to both his country and the values instilled during his military service. Upon returning to San Jose State in 1953, Don’s life took a joyous turn when he met Helen, the young lady who would become his beloved wife of 66 years. After graduating in 1957, the couple returned to Needles, where Don continued his career with Santa Fe. In 1961, their family expanded with the arrival of their daughter, Deanne.
The opening of the Needles Municipal Golf Course in 1960 became a pivotal moment in Don’s life. Falling in love with the game, he adopted the course as his own, spending countless hours honing his skills and fostering a strong sense of community among fellow golf enthusiasts. Don’s dedication extended beyond the golf course, as he coached little league baseball for many years, sharing his passion for sports with the local youth.
In 1994, Don and Helen embarked on a new chapter of their lives, retiring to Atascadero. Engaging actively in the local community, Don became involved in Native Tree and Land Preservation Clubs. His love for golf persisted, and he continued to enjoy the sport while attending various cultural events with Helen. Together, they explored the world through domestic and international travel, creating cherished memories that would last a lifetime.
