Charles Powers Obituary, Death – Charles Andrew Powers, who had been a resident of Wappingers Falls since 1972 and had previously lived in West Winfield, Hopewell Junction, and Poughkeepsie, passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at the Vassar Brothers Medical Centre in Poughkeepsie. He was 82 years old. Born on August 26, 1941 in Gouverneur, New York, he was the son of Andrew Albert Powers, who passed away, and Victoria (Thivierge) Powers, who also passed away.
Through his studies at SUNY Oneonta, he was awarded a bachelor’s degree in 1966. Subsequently, he went on to get a master’s degree from SUNY New Paltz. Charlie began his career as an educator in 1966 at Fishkill Elementary School, which is part of the Wappingers Central School District. There, he taught classes for students in the fourth and fifth grades beginning in 1966. Throughout his time in the classroom, Charlie left an indelible mark on both his students and his fellow employees.
Additionally, he was a co-founder of a number of programmes that were aimed to improve the lives of his students. These programmes included the Science Fair, School Leadership Team, and Parent Workshops. He acted as a coordinator, advisor, or facilitator for their respective programmes. Charlie was the recipient of a great number of honours and recognitions, which were bestowed upon him by organisations at the municipal, state, and federal levels. The year 2001 marked his retirement after 35 years of service.
In addition to his work in the field of education, he was a member of a number of civic organisations and gave his time for them. These organisations included the Exchange Club of Southern Dutchess, the New Hamburgh Yacht Club, the Grinell Library Friends Group, the Wappingers Historical Society, and Meals on Wheels of Wappingers Falls. The things that he enjoyed doing the most were cooking, vintage automobiles, and wine. The wedding took place at St. Anne’s Church in Garden City on November 18, 1967, and Janet Bloom was the bride. At her residence in Wappingers Falls, Janet continues to live.
