LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Drivers who take Interstate 64 in Louisville should plan on slowing down this summer.
The Kentucky Transportation Department will be demolishing and rebuilding the bridges over the Middle Fork of Beargrass Creek in both directions.
The bridges are located at mile point 11.799 near the exit to Cannons Lane on I-64 West, and Exit 12 to Interstate 264 (Watterson Expressway) on I-64 East.
Signs are already posted warning drivers as crews get ready to start the project. Lane closures and traffic shifts can be expected between Cannons Lane and I-264 daily and nightly.
KYTC said the first part of the project consists of shoulder and median work. During lane closures and traffic shifts, two 11-foot lanes will be maintained in each direction.
After the shoulder work is finished, eastbound and westbound traffic will shift to the outside shoulder for median work, KYTC said. When median work is finished, KYTC said eastbound traffic will stay on the outside shoulder, while westbound traffic will shift to the median between Breckenridge and Browns lanes.
Bridge demolition won’t start until mid-May, after the Kentucky Derby. The westbound bridge demolition will be done first, and is expected to be finished by July.
The eastbound bridge is the final phase, and is expected to be done by this fall. During the final phase, traffic will be shifted to the new westbound bridge and the median between Breckenridge and Browns lanes.
