William Bird; Obituary, Death: Ambridge, PA — It is with profound sorrow that we announce the unexpected passing of William “Bird” Floyd Sims, Jr., age 21, of Ambridge, PA, on February 27, 2025. Bird was a young man full of promise, joy, and boundless energy. Known for his integrity, loyalty, and kind-hearted nature, his sudden departure leaves a void that can never be filled.
Floyd was the cherished son of Melody Jones and Floyd Sims Sr. From a young age, he demonstrated a unique blend of humor, strength, and determination that made him stand out. He was always the one to lend a helping hand, offering support to friends and family whenever needed. His loyalty to those he loved was unwavering, and his character was built on respect, kindness, and the simple joy of being there for others.
These traits were seen not only in his interactions with family and friends but also in his work life. Bird worked at Codo Manufacturing Corporation, where he earned the respect of his colleagues. He was a diligent worker who approached every task with a sense of pride and responsibility. But beyond his work ethic, it was his demeanor that made him memorable—a warm smile, an infectious laugh, and a genuine spirit that made him easy to talk to and a joy to be around.
Floyd’s life was marked by a love of sports, and in particular, football. As a player, he embodied the passion and intensity that made the game so important to him. He began his football career with the Ambridge team before transferring to Aliquippa High School, where he played under the guidance of coaches Warfield and Short, among others. Bird was a key member of the 2022 WPIAL championship team, a milestone that will forever be etched in his memory and the memories of those who were lucky enough to witness his talent and commitment on the field.
Bird graduated from Aliquippa Senior High in 2022 and continued his education at Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina. Though he was always determined and focused on his goals, he never lost his love for the simple pleasures in life. He could often be found in his room, playing video games with snacks by his side, just enjoying life in his own quiet way. A lover of food, he was never picky about what he ate and was always ready to share a meal with those around him, especially at family cookouts or gatherings.
These moments of laughter, camaraderie, and shared joy were some of the fondest memories for his loved ones. Floyd’s impact extended beyond family and close friends. His warm and loving personality drew people to him, and his circle of friends was filled with individuals who admired his sense of humor, his honesty, and his generosity. Some of his closest friends include Miayohnna Reddick, Omar Banks, Karl McBride, Desaun Harmon, Vernon Redd Jr., and Kahni Spears, each of whom will miss him dearly.
Bird’s family was the core of his world, and he loved them fiercely. He is survived by his devoted mother, Melody Jones, and his father, Floyd Sims Sr. Along with his parents, he leaves behind his siblings Nyh’Juan (Giddy) Ross, Ta’Miah, Rishiah, and Amir Sims, each of whom will carry his memory with them always. His maternal grandmother, Allison Jones, and paternal grandmothers, Janet Sims and Floyd Hunter Sr., also mourn the loss of their beloved grandson. Additionally, Bird leaves behind his paternal grandfathers, Antonio Sims Sr. and Floyd Hunter Sr., as well as a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins who loved him deeply.
Special mention goes to his Aunt India Sims and Uncle Antonio “AJ” Sims, who played an important role in his life, as well as his uncles, Floyd “Punky” Hunter and Jalen Sims. His godparents, Brittany Spears and Juan Ross, also held a special place in his heart, and he loved them dearly. Floyd was preceded in death by his beloved Aunt Traci R. Jones, whose absence is felt deeply by the family.
The pain of losing Bird is tempered only by the knowledge that his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Bird had a way of making everyone feel important, special, and seen. His genuine love for life, his family, and his friends was evident in every conversation and in every action he took. He will always be remembered for his warmth, his authenticity, and his unwavering loyalty to those he cared for.
Though Floyd’s time with us was far too short, he lived each day with a vibrancy that touched everyone he met. His legacy will live on in the countless memories shared by family and friends, in the stories that will continue to be told, and in the love he gave so freely to all those around him. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his life. Floyd’s memory will continue to inspire all who were lucky enough to know him. To his family, friends, and everyone who was touched by his presence, we say thank you for sharing in the joy that he brought into this world.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a fund set up in Floyd’s memory to support local youth sports programs, something he was passionate about. Rest in peace, Bird. You will forever remain in our hearts, and your spirit will live on in the stories we tell, the lessons we carry, and the love we continue to share in your honor. We love you, and we will miss you always.
