Walter Montgomery Obituary, Death – Walter Scott Montgomery, Jr. died away quietly at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, October 4, 2023. His age was 93. Walter was a devoted spouse, doting father to his four children, and doting grandfather to his fourteen grandchildren. In Spartanburg, South Carolina, on December 28, 1929, Walter was brought into the world by his parents, Rose Bailey Cornelson and Walter Scott Montgomery,
Sr. He spent his childhood years on Main Street with his parents and younger sister, Rose, in a house that would later be transformed into The Piedmont Club. Walter cherished the time he was able to put his Christmas stocking on the lion’s teeth that were on the mantle in the front room, as well as the times he was able to go roller skating in the ballroom that was located on the third floor.
In 1955, Walter started his work at Spartan Mills, the family firm, in New York City, where he would remain for the next 50 years and lead the sales office for fourteen of those years. He moved back to Spartanburg in 1971 and took over as President of Spartan Mills. Over the course of his tenure, the company expanded to employ more than 5,000 people, making it the largest employer in Spartanburg County at the time. During a significant portion of this time, he had the privilege of working alongside his father, and it was during this period that Walter, who had previously been known as Walter Scott Montgomery III, was renamed Walter Jr., and his father was given the title Walter Sr.
