ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A mother is facing charges after her 4-year-old son shot himself in the hand, according to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.
On Tuesday, March 4, deputies found out about a child at Atrium Health Cabarrus. The child was first believed to have been injured by a gun slide; however, it was later revealed to be a gunshot wound.
Investigators believe the 4-year-old grabbed an unsecured weapon at home and shot himself in the hand. This happened while he was alone with his mother, 23-year-old Sara Rennie.
Thankfully, the child has non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Levine Children’s Hospital for further care.

The Rowan County Department of Social Services is also investigating the incident. Rennie is charged with failure to store a firearm to protect minors and felony child neglect. She was given a $30,000 secured bond and booked into the Rowan County Jail.
The Sheriff’s Office provides free gunlocks to residents as part of Project Child Safe. You can pick up the locks at the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office in Salisbury or at their training center at 102 N. Central Avenue, Landis.
