Shahid Burke Obituary, Death; – The El Paso County Coroner has confirmed the identity of the individual who was fatally shot during the early hours of Friday, February 28, on North Academy Boulevard near Galley Road as 24-year-old Shahid Burke.
As reported by the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), officers responded to a call at approximately 2:45 a.m. regarding a shooting in the 1000 block of N. Academy Blvd. Upon their arrival, they discovered indications of gunfire; however, no victim was present at the scene. Witnesses informed the police that the victim had been shot and subsequently entered a vehicle before departing the area.
Shortly thereafter, authorities received a report from a hospital concerning a shooting victim. Upon arrival at the hospital, officers found Burke deceased due to his injuries. It was subsequently established that Burke was the individual involved in the earlier shooting incident.
On Friday, the El Paso County Coroner performed an autopsy and confirmed Burke’s identity. While the Coroner will ascertain the cause and manner of death, the CSPD is treating the shooting as a homicide investigation.
A representative from the Mountain Post indicated that Burke was an active duty soldier stationed at Fort Carson, having served in the military for over five years. He was a member of the 2-23 Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team.
“The 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team family is heartbroken by the loss of Sgt. Shahid Burke. He was a vital member of the Raider team, and his absence will be profoundly felt throughout the brigade,” stated Col. Anthony Keller, commander of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. “Our thoughts are with Burke’s family and all who knew him during this challenging time. We are dedicated to providing support to our Soldiers who are grappling with this sudden and tragic loss.”
CSPD reported that Burke’s death marks the 11th homicide in Colorado Springs for the year 2025, in contrast to six homicides recorded at the same time last year.
