UNION COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The Union County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating multiple threatening messages that have been circulating on social media and through text messages, prompting concern from parents across the west side of Union County.
Over the past several hours, the UCSO said it has received numerous reports from worried parents about potential threats of violence directed at local school campuses.
At this time, the UCSO said that the threats are unsubstantiated, and school campuses in the affected areas remain secure.
As a proactive safety measure, Sheriff Cathey has ordered an increased law enforcement presence at the schools mentioned in the messages.
Sheriff Cathey emphasized the importance of discussing with students the district’s strict zero-tolerance policy regarding threats of violence against schools.
“Any individual found responsible for making threats, whether they are legitimate or hoaxes, will face felony charges and be held fully accountable,” the sheriff stated.
The UCSO is continuing its investigation into the origin of the messages and will provide further updates as additional information becomes available.
