CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The Charlotte Fire Department marked a significant milestone Tuesday with the groundbreaking of a new fire station on West 28th Street, a major step in replacing a firehouse that has served the community since the 1950s.
Firehouse No. 11, which had been operating out of the aging facility, will move into a state-of-the-art building designed to better serve the surrounding neighborhoods, city officials said.
Tuesday’s ceremony celebrated the beginning of construction for the modern, four-bay facility, which is set to include the latest advancements in firefighter safety, technology, and environmental sustainability.
The new Firehouse No. 11 is part of an ongoing effort by the Charlotte Fire Department to enhance its infrastructure and ensure that firefighters have the resources necessary to keep up with the city’s expanding population and evolving needs.
The entire project is expected to cost $18.9 million. Construct Fire Facilities Program approved in the Fiscal Year 2024 budget, with this projected included.
