Matthew R Kimball Obituary, Death; – Authorities have confirmed the identity of a man who lost his life while walking on I-84 in Box Elder County.
As reported by the Utah Department of Public Safety, Matthew R. Kimball, a 48-year-old resident of South Ogden, was struck by two semi-trucks on Thursday, February 20, while attempting to walk away from his disabled vehicle.
The Utah Highway Patrol had previously indicated that Kimball approached a trooper who was attending to a separate incident involving a jackknifed semi-truck. He informed the trooper of his vehicle’s breakdown and requested assistance to reach town. The trooper advised Kimball to return to his vehicle and remain inside. However, instead of following this advice, Kimball walked past his vehicle for several miles before being struck, as noted in a statement from DPS on February 21.
Shortly before 8 p.m., the first semi-truck approached Kimball. The driver reportedly did not see him until the last moment, and despite swerving to avoid a collision, the side mirror struck Kimball’s head, causing him to fall to the ground.
Authorities indicated that the second truck, which was following closely behind the first, did not witness the incident or realize that a pedestrian was present on the roadway. Investigators believe that Kimball succumbed to his injuries after being struck by the second truck.
