Kevin Campbell Obituary, Death; – The family of retired footballer Kevin Campbell has raised concerns regarding the medical care he received prior to his passing, as presented in a coroner’s court.
The former striker for Everton and Arsenal passed away at the age of 54 at Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI) on June 15 of the previous year. A preliminary determination of his cause of death was attributed to multi-organ failure resulting from a heart infection known as infective endocarditis.
During the proceedings at Manchester Coroner’s Court, it was revealed that Mr. Campbell had multiple hospital admissions leading up to his final stay at MRI in May 2024, including a six-and-a-half week period during which no definitive cause for his deteriorating health was established.
Mr. Campbell, who also had stints with Nottingham Forest and Trabzonspor in Turkey, had been in good health until approximately January 2024. The pre-inquest review indicated that MRI had subsequently classified the incident as a Level 5 patient safety issue, the highest severity level, concerning his treatment.
Sebastian Naughton, the attorney representing Mr. Campbell’s family, noted that the MRI’s internal investigation had uncovered “some shortcomings” in the care provided, particularly regarding delays in diagnosis during his last hospitalization. He emphasized that the family, who were not in attendance at the hearing, sought further information about his initial admission.
“The family has inquiries regarding the first admission,” he stated. “In general terms, they wish to understand how it was possible for there to be a six-and-a-half week stay without a clear diagnosis and whether there was an earlier opportunity for intervention.”
Zak Golombek, the area coroner for Manchester, postponed the proceedings in anticipation of a comprehensive inquest hearing, the date of which has yet to be determined. A statement from Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust indicated that it would refrain from commenting on the ongoing inquest.
During his career, Campbell netted 59 goals in 224 appearances for Arsenal, where he secured the 1990/91 league title, as well as the FA Cup, League Cup, and European Cup Winners’ Cup. He played for Nottingham Forest for three years starting in 1995 and had a brief tenure in Turkey before joining Everton in 1999, where he remained until 2005, serving as captain under Walter Smith.
