Travis Lunsford Obituary, Death;- A patient at Logansport State Hospital has been charged with murder following an incident in which he allegedly assaulted another patient, who subsequently succumbed to his injuries.
Court documents submitted to Cass County Court on Tuesday indicate that 56-year-old John Loran faces the following charges:
– One count of murder
– One count of aggravated battery, which poses a significant risk of death, classified as a Level 3 felony
– One count of battery resulting in moderate bodily injury, classified as a Level 6 felony
In early February, Indiana State Police troopers responded to a report of battery at the Logansport hospital. They reviewed video footage related to an incident involving Loran that allegedly took place on February 4.
According to the documents, the footage shows several patients passing through a set of double doors, one of which was being held open by Loran. As another patient, identified as Travis Lunsford, approached, Loran is said to have struck him in the face with his elbow. The documents further allege that Loran kicked Lunsford in the head multiple times and stomped on his head, in addition to delivering several punches to Lunsford’s face. Lunsford was subsequently transported to a hospital in Fort Wayne, where he was pronounced dead on February 16.
The documents also reveal that troopers examined a second video capturing an incident that occurred shortly after the first altercation. In this footage, Loran allegedly approached another patient and struck him in the head, followed by a kick to the side of the head and two stomps on the back of his head.
After the second incident, Loran was escorted by hospital staff through a set of double doors while additional personnel attended to the second patient. In an interview with the second patient, he informed the troopers that he had never interacted with Loran prior to the attack and expressed the belief that Loran had premeditated the assault, given Loran’s awareness of the circumstances surrounding his own hospitalization.
