CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Students at West Mecklenburg High School made their voices heard on Tuesday as they staged a walkout to protest the current state of their school facilities and the lack of extracurricular opportunities.
A group of students gathered outside the school building located along 7400 Tuckaseegee Road twice on Tuesday, Feb. 18, demanding better school facilities and more support services.
For many of the students involved, Tuesday’s walkout was just the beginning of their efforts to bring about lasting change for their school community.
The walkout ended peacefully, with students returning to class after a short rally.
Statement from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools sent to Queen City News regarding the walkout:
Good morning, West Mecklenburg High School families, this is Principal Casimir Bundrick reaching out to inform you that today some of our students participated in a peaceful walkout on campus to build awareness for improving school facilities, adding services and clubs.
We respect the rights of our students to advocate for causes that are important to them, and we support their efforts to do so in an authorized and orderly manner while at school.
The student walkout was brief and everyone returned to the classrooms for teaching and learning. We thank our students for the way they conducted themselves today while allowing their civic voices to be heard. Thank you for your continued support of West Mecklenburg High School and have a great rest of your day.
