Bill James Accident – Methuen High School Wrestling Coach Bill James of Salem, NH was injured in a tragic accident that took place on Monday 4th September 2023. Family, friends and colleagues have taken to social media to pray for his recovery.
Billerica Memorial High Wrestling shared the news through a post that says “A member of the wrestling community and Head Wrestling coach at Methuen High School needs our support. Coach Bill James had a terrible accident this past Labor Day weekend”.

Methuen wrestling coach Bill James has dedicated his illustrious career to elevating wrestling programs across New England. In a remarkable milestone achieved on Wednesday, amidst an outstanding 18-2-1 season, James secured his 400th career victory while leading the Rangers. James boasts an impressive tally of 519 victories in his coaching journey, which has seen him make significant contributions at various stops, including Ipswich, Bishop Guertin (N.H.), and Hamilton-Wenham.
His journey with Methuen began in the late 1990s when he initially served as an assistant coach before assuming the role of head coach in 2001.
Under James’ tutelage, the Rangers embarked on an unforgettable undefeated season that culminated in a division 1 state championship triumph in 2012. Over the span of 21 years, he has also steered the team to an impressive seven Merrimack Valley Conference championships.
Despite facing the challenging task of rebuilding the team after graduating 11 starters in 2021, Coach James has worn multiple hats—serving as a dedicated teacher, mentor, coach, and inspiring leader. To numerous MHS wrestlers and students, he stands as a genuine hero. James recognizes the unparalleled commitment he has for every student at MHS. His unwavering devotion to the sport of wrestling, his family, and the entire student body at our school stands as a living testament to Coach James’ unwritten code of wrestling, which he has generously imparted to many over their years at MHS.
