ROCK HILL, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A 17-year-old boy has been sentenced in connection to a golf cart crash that killed a 15-year-old girl last August.
According to the York County Solicitors Office, the teenager, who was just 16 years old at the time of the accident, was issued an indeterminate sentence not to exceed his 21st birthday.
Authorities said the teen was “driving like a NASCAR driver” when he was operating a Honda CRV that struck a golf cart carrying six people, along Laurel Creek Drive on July 25, 2024.
On Aug. 26, 2024, the teen was officially charged with reckless homicide after law enforcement determined he was going too fast above the speed limit, causing the fatal collision.
Officers said there were six riders on the golf cart which flipped over upon impact. One of the riders, Marlie Sullivan, 15, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Aside from the boy’s excessive speed, police said he was also driving in the wrong lane. Three other golf cart riders were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Rock Hill Police said the boy remained at the scene following the accident.
The 17-year-old is currently being held in the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.
