BURKE COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Two men are dead after their cars collided head-on in Burke County Sunday evening, troopers say.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to Airport Rhodhiss Road near Nelson Gates Street around 5 p.m. to investigate the crash. Officials say a 2002 Dodge Dakota was traveling east on Airport Rhodhiss when the driver lost control, crossed the centerline and struck a 2003 Lincoln Town Car.
The driver of the Dodge, Gregory Neal Huffman, 54, of Hickory died at the scene. Troopers say he was not wearing a seatbelt.
The driver of the Lincoln, Charles Verle Kistler Jr., 45, of Connelly Springs died while being transported by EMS to the hospital.
The initial investigation showed that speed was a contributing factor in the crash.
The road was closed for around two hours during the on-scene investigation.
