Mary Scarborough Obituary, Death- Mary Evelyn Scarborough, a cherished mother, grandmother, and community member, died in her Indianapolis home with her daughter Cynthia on August 26, 2023. The mother survived to 95. Mary Grimes was born May 1, 1928, to Adam and Dora (Mixon) Grimes, Sr. Mary dedicated her life to assisting others.
Mary married Charles C. Scarborough, Sr. in 1953 and lived with him until his death on April 17, 2004. Mary will be remembered for her contributions to her family, church, city, and country. Lucy Laney High School alumna In Augusta, Georgia, Mary attended Paine College. She earned Bachelor of Science degrees in English and Education in 1951. Mary earned her Georgia elementary teaching certification. She focused on her Augusta, Georgia, studies.
Mary’s extracurricular was military duty. From 1951 through 1954, she served honorably in the US Army WAC during the Korean War. Mary managed Fort Dix Hospital in New Jersey. The US Women’s Army Corps awarded her an Honorable Discharge and National Defense Medal in 1954. Her husband Charles Sr. retired from the Air Force after service in the US and abroad and moved to Kokomo, Indiana. Mary retired in 2004 as Kokomo Howard County Public Library’s Children’s Librarian after 35 years.
She read audiobooks for “Call-A-Story,” “Children’s Summer Reading Club,” and “Exciting Children’s Story Hours.” She led Kokomo School Corporation kids, volunteered for Cub Scouts, and helped at polls. Mary was Wayman Chapel AME Church’s Stewardess Board, Missionary Society, Children’s Leader, and Sunday School Teacher. Her hard work earned her the “Women of Wayman Trailblazer Award.” She enjoyed the arts and encouraged others to do so.
Her adored children are Rhonda K. Scarborough, J.D. of Washington, DC, Charles C. (Darlene) Scarborough, Jr. of Indiana, Cynthia M. Scarborough of Indiana, Avistine Y. (Fabian Cook, Sr.) Scarborough-Cook of Georgia, Richard M. (Robin) Scarborough of Tennessee, and Cecil X. Scarborough of Her seven granddaughters, four great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and others were influenced by her. Twenty years of superb care from Charles and Cynthia Scarborough for Mary.
Reverend William L. Gary will officiate Mary’s memorial ceremony at Wayman AME Chapel (920 North Apperson Way), Kokomo, IN, on September 2, 2023, at 11:00 AM. Wayman Chapel welcomes family and guests from 9 to 11 a.m. The US Army and VFW Military Rites Team will commemorate Mary at Kokomo Memorial Park Cemetery. Donations to Wayman AME Chapel are preferred over flowers. Mary Evelyn Scarborough’s early death won’t diminish her dedication, compassion, and love.
