A 73-year-old man suffered serious and potentially life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a van as he crossed the street early Sunday morning, according to the Stamford Police Department.

Police responded to the hit and run at 1200 block of Washington Boulevard in Stamford shortly after 2:30 a.m.

According to police, a 2021 Chevy Express van was traveling south on Washington Boulevard, and the pedestrian was hit while attempting to cross from the east to the west side of the street. The Stamford man was not in the crosswalk when he was struck, according to Stamford police.

Police said the van did not stop and fled the scene. The pedestrian was transported to Stamford Hospital.

Shortly after the crash, Stamford police located the alleged owner of the van, Jean Vieux, 24 of Stamford, in a nearby parking lot and identified him. The van was found with the help of traffic cameras.

Police said Vieux allegedly admitted that he “was driving the van and struck something but did not give any further details.” Vieux was arrested for evading responsibility and was being held on bond.

The Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad is investigating and anyone who witnessed or have information about the crash are asked to call (203) 977-4712.
