COLUMBUS, Ohio — Former Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder, who was found guilty and sentenced to time in federal prison, has been moved to an institution in the state of Oklahoma. Since the 29th of June, when he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the worst corruption scheme in Ohio’s history, the Republican, who is 64 years old, has been detained in the Butler County Jail, which is located in the southwestern part of the state.
According to the documents kept by the Bureau of Prisons, he was relocated not too long ago to the federal transfer center in Oklahoma City. According to his attorney, Steven Bradley, Householder’s plea to be released while his appeal is being considered was not granted. Matt Borges, a former leader of the Ohio Republican Party who was also a member of the House of Representatives and a lobbyist, was found guilty in March of conspiring to participate in a racketeering enterprise that involved bribery and money laundering.
A jury found that Householder masterminded, and Borges participated in a $60 million bribery scheme that was secretly funded by Akron-based FirstEnergy Corp. This scheme was designed to secure Householder’s power, elect his allies, and then to pass and defend legislation that delivered a $1 billion nuclear power plant bailout of two nuclear plants that were owned by a FirstEnergy affiliate. The jury found that Householder masterminded and Borges participated in this scheme. FirstEnergy has also confirmed that it was involved in the scandal.
Two other individuals and the dark money group entered guilty pleas, while a third man who was charged took his own life. According to the records of the agency, Borges, who is now 51 years old, was given a sentence of five years, which he is currently serving in the federal prison in Milan, Michigan, which is located near Ann Arbor.
