Matthew Nedorostek Obituary, Death; – A man from Westfield tragically lost his life on Friday morning after authorities indicated that he likely fell into a silo at a concrete mixing facility. The individual, identified as 66-year-old Matthew Nedorostek by Western Mass News, was working at the Chicopee Concrete Service site located on Cleveland Street, which is utilized for mixing dry materials.
According to coworkers, Nedorostek had ascended to the top of a tower earlier that morning. Concern arose when he failed to respond to radio communications, prompting a call for assistance, as reported by the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office on Friday evening.
This situation led to a significant emergency response, which included personnel from Greenfield Police and firefighters, South Deerfield Fire Department, detectives from the State Police Unit associated with the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, members of the Western Massachusetts Technical Rescue Team, and a specialized operations team from the state’s Department of Fire Services.
Additional responders included the Greenfield Department of Public Works, LIFE STAR, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, and firefighters from Turners Falls, Erving, and Deerfield. Rescue teams arrived at approximately 8:45 a.m., but by mid-morning, the Greenfield Fire Department had reclassified the operation from a rescue to a recovery effort.
The worker’s body was ultimately retrieved around 4:30 p.m., as stated by the district attorney’s office. The cause of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Furthermore, the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has initiated an investigation into the incident, as confirmed by spokesperson Erika Ruthman.
