Two soldiers were killed Thursday evening in a training accident at Fort Stewart, a disaster that sent shockwaves through the military community and far beyond. Among those who perished was Shelbe Butner, and her passing has left friends, family members, and those in service absolutely distraught.
The soldiers were assigned to the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, and were on a field training exercise when the vehicle accident occurred. No other soldiers were injured in the incident, which is under investigation.
Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie, commanding general of the 3rd Infantry Division, said, “I am deeply saddened by the loss.
“We are heartbroken about this tragic accident, and we will do everything we can to support the soldiers’ families and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” he said. “The entire division extends our deepest condolences to the families of the soldiers who died in this accident.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp also extended condolences in a message on X, formerly Twitter: “Please join Marty, the girls and me in praying for the families of these two soldiers and the entire Fort Stewart community during this time. We are heartbroken to hear about the passing of these two brave souls who sought to serve their nation.”
While officials have not released the names of those killed pending notification of their families, loved ones confirmed Butner’s death in heartfelt messages on social media.
Budd Juneya Sixt, a fellow soldier, remembered her dedication and spirit: “She was such a down-to-earth person. And a damn good NCO that really cared about her troops. Always motivated with a positive attitude, no matter how bad things seemed to get. RIP Battle Shelbe Butner; you will be missed.”
Ambers Marie, a relative, spoke of the deep grief her family is going through in a post: “Losing my cousin, Shelbe Butner, in a training accident is almost too much. She was sunshine on a cloudy day. She was so loved, and my heart hurts for my family, especially her mom, Lou Smith. Keep us all in your prayers.
