Yasin Morrison Obituary, Death; – Authorities are actively pursuing the individual responsible for the shooting death of a 9-year-old boy in Newark on Friday evening. The tragic incident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Osborne Terrace.
The victim, identified as Yasin Morrison, was en route to visit his grandmother when he was shot. Tisha Bolden, Morrison’s grandmother, expressed her grief to Eyewitness News, revealing that her grandson has autism and is non-verbal. She is now urging the perpetrator to surrender.
“You took a life, you took a special life — a sweet boy that could never be replaced,” she stated. “Wherever you are, I just wish you do the right thing and turn yourself in, come forward and deal with whatever that has to be dealt with because he did not deserve what happened to him.”
Emergency responders transported the child to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office reported that another man was also injured in the incident. He was taken to the hospital and is anticipated to recover.
A neighbor recounted to Eyewitness News that he heard as many as ten gunshots during the event. Another witness reported seeing what appeared to be a car crash behind the crime scene tape. In response, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka issued a statement condemning the shooting as “sickening.”
“Tonight, I am outraged by the incomprehensible death of an eight-year-old boy who was shot in our city. It is sickening to me that anyone would be so deranged to recklessly endanger an innocent child. The loss of this child’s life is infuriating to me as a father myself. We will not tolerate this reckless and dangerous behavior. The killer should know—we are coming after you. We will not rest until we find you, so turn yourself in now,” Baraka declared.
In addition, authorities are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for any information that leads to an arrest.
