Washington, D.C. – In a move that surprised many, President Donald Trump met with New York City’s newly elected Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, at the White House on Friday. While Mamdani identifies as a socialist, and has been previously labeled a “communist”, President Trump expressed optimism about working together for the good of New York City.

During a brief appearance before the press, President Trump emphasized that he and the new mayor share a key goal: a better New York. He congratulated Mamdani on his victory, acknowledging the tough race he ran against other contenders.

“We have one thing in common,” President Trump stated, “We want this city of ours that we love to do very well.” The President highlighted shared concerns like housing affordability and the rising cost of living.

President Trump predicted that New York City would have a “great mayor” and assured that the White House would offer assistance. He stressed that party differences wouldn’t stand in the way of helping the city thrive, emphasizing the importance of a safe and strong New York for everyone.

Even though White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt had previously called Mamdani a “communist”, President Trump has said that his administration is open to working with any leader, regardless of political affiliation, for the betterment of the country.

Mamdani expressed his appreciation for the meeting, saying it was focused on improving life for New Yorkers. Both he and the President acknowledged their differing views but emphasized their shared commitment to addressing the challenges facing the city, particularly the burden of high living costs.

When questioned about his past criticism of President Trump, Mamdani was met with the President’s good humor. President Trump praised Mamdani as someone who could bring positive changes to New York City, making it safer and more affordable.

President Trump stated, “I met with a man who wants to… really wants to see New York be great again.” He recalled a time when New York was thriving and expressed hope that Mamdani could restore the city to its former glory.

Addressing concerns about rising anti-semitism, Mamdani pledged to protect New York City’s Jewish community.

Mamdani is set to be sworn in as Mayor of New York City on January 1.
