An accident that occurred in Clonmel, County Tipperary, claimed the lives of four young people. As a result of the accident that took place on Mountain Road in the town at approximately 7.30 p.m., the deaths of one male victim in his early 20s and three female victims in their teens have been confirmed.
The post-mortem exams that are scheduled to take place in the next days will take place at South Tipperary General Hospital, where their bodies have been brought. The incident took place on Mountain Road in the vicinity of the entrance to the Hillview Sports Club.
The road is currently closed, and local detours have been put into place; it is anticipated that the closure will continue throughout the night. After some time has passed, a forensic investigation will be carried out at the location of the collision. It is believed that the women had received the results of their Leaving Cert exams today and were on their way to a party to celebrate their accomplishments.
It is suspected that the driver lost control of the vehicle while it was traveling downhill, causing it to flip over. There was no other car involved in the accident. Gardai are requesting that anyone who may have witnessed the collision get in touch with them at the Clonmel Garda Station.
Garda are requesting that any road users who may have video footage, including film from dash cams, and who were driving in the Mountain Road area between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7.45 p.m. make that evidence available to them so that they can investigate the incident.
