Latrista Warfield Obituary, Death; – The individual implicated in the first homicide investigation of 2025 in Peoria is now facing a murder charge related to the death of a 37-year-old woman from the same city.
As previously reported, the state has amended the charges against Derrick Hall Sr., 45, by adding a count of first-degree murder for knowingly discharging a firearm in a manner likely to cause significant injury or death.
During a court session on Tuesday, state prosecutors submitted a petition to detain Hall, asserting that no conditions could sufficiently reduce his threat to the community. They highlighted that this marks his third offense involving possession of a firearm as a felon.
Judge Mark Gilles approved the state’s petition for detention on Tuesday, stating that there is clear and convincing evidence indicating Hall poses a genuine threat to community safety, and that no conditions could alleviate this risk. He characterized Hall’s actions as “heinous and brutal” and described Hall’s criminal history as “troubling.”
Hall’s public defender noted that he is unmarried and has completed only up to the eighth grade in his education. Furthermore, the defense indicated that Hall is currently unemployed, suffers from PTSD and high blood pressure, and assists in the care of a grandchild.
The public defender also mentioned that Hall expressed his commitment to adhere to any conditions set by the court if released, citing his responsibility towards his grandchild.
Court documents indicate that at approximately 11 a.m. on Sunday, January 19, Peoria Police responded to a call at 1417 W. Candlelight Court. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of 37-year-old Latrista Warfield lying deceased in the hallway on the second floor.
In a court appearance on Wednesday, Prosecutor Terry Muench reported that residents of the apartment reported hearing gunshots around 3 a.m. He also mentioned a voicemail from the victim, which captured the sound of two gunshots followed by agonal breathing.
Prosecutors disclosed that Warfield had been shot six times, and several shell casings were located in the hallway.
