Sonny Charles Leppala Obituary, Death; – A 55-year-old inmate at Birmingham City Jail was discovered deceased in his cell earlier this week.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the individual as Sonny Charles Leppala on Wednesday. He was a resident of Birmingham. Leppala was found unresponsive in his private cell at 1:29 a.m. on Monday and was pronounced dead at the facility at 2:19 a.m.
Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates reported that the discovery was made by jail staff during a routine wellness check. An autopsy revealed no indications of trauma or foul play, according to Yates, and further laboratory tests are currently being conducted.
Authorities have not released information regarding Leppala’s charges or the duration of his stay at the city jail. The Birmingham police are conducting an investigation.
