Michael Meagher Obituary, Death;- A young boy has tragically lost his life due to a shooting incident, and his stepfather is currently in custody. The Lake Geneva Police Department reported that officers responded to a shooting at a residence on Lincoln Avenue early Monday morning, around 2 a.m.
Authorities have stated that Steven Merkel Jr., aged 52, was apprehended at the scene and charged with first-degree reckless homicide following the death of the shooting victim at the hospital.
According to WISN, the victim has been identified as 9-year-old Michael Meagher, who was the stepson of Merkel. Geneva Police Chief Anthony Miceli remarked on the challenging and distressing nature of the scene for the responding officers.
“It’s a hard scene for any officer; you never want to see that,” Miceli commented regarding the incident. In the wake of this tragedy, family members have initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with the funeral expenses for the boy.
“Our family is heartbroken. I want to try to help this family in any way that I can,” stated organizer Katherine Koskinas. “Michael was 9 years old & a bright, funny boy. Please pray for this family during this difficult time.”
WIFR has reported that Merkel resided at the location where the shooting took place and has been booked into the Walworth County jail.
