Raviteja Koyyada Obituary, Death; A food delivery driver was tragically shot and killed in New Haven while performing his duties on Sunday afternoon.
This incident marks the first homicide of the year in New Haven and appears to have stemmed from a robbery. Authorities are currently investigating whether this was a premeditated act or an opportunistic crime.
“We are uncertain if the delivery was completed and this was a crime of opportunity, or if the driver was specifically targeted. We do not have conclusive information at this time,” stated Officer Christian Bruckhart of the New Haven Police Department.
The shooting took place on Shepard Street in New Haven, near the Hamden town line in the Newhallville area. According to the New Haven police, they received multiple 911 calls shortly before 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Reports indicate that an individual shot and killed a delivery driver for a Chinese restaurant and subsequently stole his vehicle. The victim has been identified as 26-year-old Raviteja Koyyada from Hamden. Authorities located Koyyada’s vehicle not far from the crime scene, and it is currently undergoing DNA analysis.
As the investigation continues, police suggest that the incident appears to have been a robbery that escalated into a fatal confrontation. “He was expected to return but did not, which raised concerns, prompting them to go to the scene,” Officer Bruckhart remarked. “It is a tragic situation; a man simply trying to earn a living was senselessly killed.”
Local resident Sonia Powell expressed her concerns, stating, “I observed three police cars stationed here. Access was restricted in both directions. We need enhanced safety measures.” Powell, a resident of the neighborhood for 26 years, noted that violence has become a recurring issue.
“The quality of life has deteriorated, and it is no longer the same,” Powell added. “I do not feel safe, especially after a shooting occurred a few months ago.” Residents hope that detectives will thoroughly investigate the case and apprehend those responsible.
“I believe increased police presence is necessary to improve the situation. They need to pay closer attention to the areas where these incidents frequently occur,” suggested Don, another New Haven resident. This incident not only marks the first homicide of the year in New Haven but also highlights ongoing concerns regarding safety in the community.
