The history of John’s involvement with the band stretches all the way back to the beginning. He taught music in a number of schools in the Hobart area and beyond. in the time that the band was first getting started, he was working at New Norfolk High School as the brass tutor alongside Layton Hodgetts.
As a direct consequence of this, he was an ardent supporter of the band and he instructed a great deal of brass musicians inside the organization. He was a member of the band in addition to being an exceptionally gifted trombonist who played the instrument on his own.
In the early years, while he was performing the Last Post at the Anzac Day Dawn Service in New Norfolk, he was always outstanding for his performance. And perhaps most memorably, traveled to Denmark in 2004 with the band in order to take part in the festivities surrounding the wedding of Crown Prince Frederick and Mary Donaldson.
In recent years, he has been an enthusiastic concert attendee, and he has shown persistent and loving support to Layton when he was unwell, as well as to Layton’s family following Layton’s loss. In addition, he has been there since Layton’s passing.
