(PINPOINT WEATHER) — Good evening and happy Sunday Funday!
As we close out the weekend, we are tracking the coldest air in two years pushing into the region along with some snow up in the mountains. Dangerous wind chills are expected to start the week with temperatures potentially not moving above freezing in Charlotte until Thursday. There is some potential for snow showers late Tuesday, but otherwise, dry weather is expected with the cold temperatures this week.
As for tonight and MLK Day, cold air will rush into the region as we go through the evening and overnight hours with temperatures falling into the low 20s. Snow in the mountains is expected to taper off overnight, but Winter Storm Warnings are in effect until 7 AM Monday for up to six inches of snow. In addition to the snow, the mountains will experience bitterly cold wind chills with ‘feels-like’ temperatures as low as 20 below zero early Monday morning. MLK will be sunny and cold across the region with highs in Charlotte likely staying below freezing.
The middle of the week will be dominated by bitterly cold temperatures across the Carolinas and mainly dry conditions. The potential exception to that will come Tuesday night and Wednesday when a weak developing storm system could push a few snow showers in the region, especially south and east of Charlotte. In general, don’t expect too much in the way of accumulation from this system.
Once we get to the end of the week our temperatures finally should start to moderate with highs on Friday back into the low to mid-40s. Even with the warmup, our temperatures will continue to remain below average through at least next weekend. In the meantime, get ready for some serious Arctic Air!
Stay warm this week!
