(PINPOINT WEATHER) — Good Sunday Morning! Hope everyone has had a wonderful start to the weekend.
We are dealing with some dense fog and mist this morning, with many of our counties under Dense Fog Advisories until 11 a.m. this morning. Be sure to use caution!
It is a chilly start this morning, but milder compared to most of our starts this January—temperatures in the 40s to start your day.
Expect gradual clearing as the day goes on, with more sunshine during the afternoon. Temperatures towards Charlotte will climb into the low to mid-50s today, with a few scattered showers possible through the day. Conditions will turn breezy this afternoon and evening, as a strong northwesterly breeze moves in.
Snow showers will develop in the mountains later this morning and continue through early Monday. Some areas in the high country could see 2-4 inches of snowfall today and tonight, which will lead to slick travel conditions. Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for Watauga and Avery counties until 7 a.m. Monday, with a Winter Weather Advisory in effect for Ashe County until 7 a.m. Monday.
An Extreme Cold Warning is also in effect for Ashe, Watauga, and Avery counties tonight and through Monday morning, as dangerously low wind chills move into the high country. Wind chills could fall as low as 15 below zero in our mountain counties by Monday morning.
M.L.K. Day will look beautiful, with plenty of sunshine and dry conditions. However, it will be the start of our Arctic blast.
High temperatures will be in the 30s through Thursday, with overnight low temperatures in the teens! Be sure to let your faucets drip and insulate your pipes as much as possible. Open your cabinet doors in the kitchen and bathroom to let heat in on your pipes. When outdoors this week, be sure to wear multiple layers and cover up as much skin as possible.
We are monitoring the chance for light snowfall late Tuesday into early Wednesday. As of Sunday morning, the snow looks mostly limited to the eastern Carolinas. However, there is the possibility of a few snow flurries in Charlotte and areas east Tuesday night.
Any snowfall will cause hazardous travel conditions and stick quickly due to how cold the air and ground will be preceding any snow. So, even light snowfall accumulations could cause issues by the Wednesday morning commute. We will continue to monitor.
It does look like we will thaw out slightly from our Arctic air by Friday and Saturday, with highs returning into the 40s.
