David Fitzgerald; Obituary, Death: It is with profound sorrow and a deep sense of loss that we announce the passing of David Francis Fitzgerald, who left us unexpectedly on December 29, 2024, his 73rd birthday. David, known for his quiet strength, kind heart, and unwavering devotion to his loved ones, was the cherished husband of Janet Sullivan Fitzgerald. His passing leaves a hole in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
David was born and raised in Malden, Massachusetts, the son of the late Francis and Anna Fitzgerald. He grew up in a loving and close-knit family, sharing his childhood with his two sisters and many cousins. Family vacations were an important part of his upbringing, and cherished memories of summers spent at Hampton Beach remained a treasured part of his life. David’s early years were defined by a strong sense of family, a love for tradition, and a genuine compassion for others.
These qualities carried him through the years, guiding his relationships with those he loved and the life he built with his family. In 1991, David married the love of his life, Janet Sullivan, and the two began a wonderful journey together. They settled in Burlington, Massachusetts, where they spent many happy years building a life filled with love, travel, and cherished memories.
In 2021, they moved to the welcoming and vibrant community of Martins Landing in North Reading, where they quickly became beloved members, surrounded by friends who loved and respected them both. Their shared life was rich with joy, laughter, and mutual support, a true partnership of love and devotion. David worked for Lahey Hospital & Medical Center for 27 years, retiring as the Purchasing Manager.
His career was marked by his commitment to excellence, his work ethic, and his dedication to ensuring the smooth operation of the hospital. Throughout his years at Lahey, David was well respected by his colleagues and made a lasting impact through his integrity and service. His professional life was a reflection of the values that guided him in all aspects of his life—honesty, reliability, and a dedication to the well-being of others.
David’s personal life was also filled with adventure and passion. He and Janet enjoyed countless vacations to Marco Island, cruises to the Caribbean, and trips to many other destinations that brought them closer together. One of their most cherished experiences was spending summers at their lake house in the Meadows at South Down Shores in Laconia, New Hampshire. These summers, spent by the water and in the company of friends and family, were a highlight of their lives, and David’s love for these moments was immeasurable.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, David was an avid fan of Boston College athletics. As an alumni and long-time supporter, he and Janet proudly held season tickets to both Boston College football and hockey. Their shared love of sports brought them many happy moments, whether they were cheering for their beloved teams or enjoying the camaraderie that came with attending the games together.
Throughout the many challenges David faced in recent years with his health, Janet stood by his side with unwavering love and care. Their bond, forged over decades of shared experiences, only grew stronger as they weathered these difficult times together. Janet’s devotion to David was evident in every gesture, every word, and every moment of their time together. The love they shared is a testament to the deep connection they built throughout their lives.
David was also deeply proud of his family, and he had a special affection for his many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He took great joy in hearing about their accomplishments and keeping up with their lives, always eager to ask about their activities and achievements. His genuine interest in their well-being was a reflection of the warmth and care he showed to everyone he encountered.

David is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Janet (Sullivan) Fitzgerald of North Reading, formerly of Burlington. He was the dear brother of Janet Fitzgerald of Wakefield and Lisa Hammersley & her husband Alan of Florida.
He was a devoted brother-in-law to Edward and Mary Sullivan of Scituate, Brian and Maryellen Sullivan of Tewksbury, Kevin and Karen Sullivan of Burlington, and Scott and Joanne Donahue of Grafton. He was the proud uncle of Matthew Sullivan and his girlfriend Allie Mitchell, Kathleen Capps & her husband Michael, Theresa Ross & her husband Jack, Kaitlyn Sullivan and her companion Will Sampson, Brian Sullivan & his wife Hannah, Caroline Ambery & her husband Peter.
Erin Sullivan & her fiancée Jason Kashmanian, Kyle Sullivan & his wife Cristin, Julia Sullivan and her fiancée Joseph Cristadoro, Brendan Donahue & his girlfriend Isabella Spagnuolo, Andrew Sullivan, Colin Donahue, Evan Hammersley, Kelsey Hammersley, and Jackson Hammersley. He was also the great uncle of Aiden, Finn, Sully, Lillian, Cameron, Delia, Charlotte, Andrea, and Patrick. David is also survived by many cousins, all of whom will miss him deeply.
David was predeceased by his parents, Francis and Anna Fitzgerald, and he will be missed by all who knew him—family, friends, and colleagues alike. Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home on Thursday, January 2, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 3, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Margaret Church, St. Veronica Parish, 111 Winn Street, Burlington. Burial will follow at Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Burlington.
David’s passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the lives of his family and friends. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, his love of life, and his deep devotion to those he cared for.
