Lake Como boating accident
After hearing reports that Graham McGrath, 19, had fallen into Lake Como while he was on a boat with 13 of his college buddies, the Fort Myers police department moved promptly to begin a search for the missing young man. The exhaustive search that lasted over 12 hours continued into the early morning hours of Thursday, when authorities located McGrath’s body just after 11 in the morning. The search for the missing Florida Gulf Coast University student included the use of a helicopter, jet skis, and divers from the sheriff’s office. The lake included 80 acres.
The sheriff of Lee County, Carmine Marceno, would not disclose exactly how McGrath fell overboard, but he did affirm that the body was found ‘intact’ and that there were no obvious signs of damage on the body.
As the “death investigation” is ongoing, the office does not have reason to assume that there was any foul play involved, but they have not completely ruled it out either. On Wednesday evening, Marceno stated that there had been “14 occupants on a boat with a capacity of 16,” and that the search was continuing with “all hands on deck” due to the fact that the water in the lake “is dark.” It’s hard to see. It is now evening. It is not an easy path to take.
It takes relatively little time for the lake’s depth to increase by ten, twenty, or even thirty feet. According to the authorities, they conducted interviews with the remaining people who were on the boat at the time McGrath went overboard. None of these people are students at the university that McGrath attended.
