Nelson Chumap Obituary, Death; – A 23-year-old individual has been taken into custody on murder charges following the death of a 39-year-old man in Norwich on Friday evening. Authorities were alerted to William W. Backus Hospital at approximately 11:35 p.m. after an unresponsive male, covered in blood, was admitted.
Upon arrival, officers determined that the victim, identified as Nelson Chumap, had sustained a fatal stab wound and was declared dead shortly thereafter. Investigators linked the homicide to a residence located at 118 Baltic Road, which was subsequently secured as a crime scene.
The suspect, Jhon Paul Cela-Pichisaca, was located within the premises and was initially arrested on charges of third-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace, following witness accounts of a physical confrontation between him and Chumap prior to the latter’s death. Throughout the weekend, detectives and officers conducted interviews, collected vital evidence, and analyzed several hours of video surveillance.
As a result of the investigation, Cela-Pichisaca was later charged with murder and possession of a dangerous weapon. He is currently being held on a $500,000 cash surety bond and is awaiting arraignment at Norwich Superior Court. The investigation remains ongoing.
