Charquan Hargrove Obituary, Death; – Authorities announced on Friday morning the identities of the two Des Moines police officers involved in a fatal shooting that occurred last week on the city’s south side.
The incident took place shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 2, in the 2100 block of Meadow Court. Officers responded to the residence to conduct a welfare check on an individual believed to be inside, who had outstanding felony warrants for domestic abuse assault and possession of a firearm by a felon. Sgt. Paul Parizek confirmed that officers found a man they suspected to be the wanted individual, who subsequently fled from them.
Officers pursued the man, later identified as 32-year-old Charquan Hargrove, instructing him to stop and display his hands, as stated by Parizek. He noted that body-worn camera footage captured Hargrove firing a handgun directly at one of the officers.
In response, two senior officers, Brian Stern and Nicholas Rude, returned fire, resulting in Hargrove’s death. A third officer present at the scene did not discharge their weapon, according to the Des Moines Police Department.
Officer Stern has served with the department for five years, while Officer Rude has been with the department for two years. Both officers are currently on administrative leave pending the investigation into the shooting.
