Joal Campbell Arrested; – The individual implicated in a suspected DUI incident in central Fresno has been identified as 36-year-old Joal Campbell. The incident occurred shortly before 7:20 PM on Monday at the intersection of Belmont and Palm.
According to Fresno police, Campbell was operating a black truck with his headlights turned off when he disregarded a red light, colliding with a gold truck in the intersection. Surveillance footage from a nearby establishment, obtained by Action News, captures the moment of the collision. The video shows the headlights of the gold truck in the intersection just prior to the impact with the black truck.
In the aftermath, the gold truck overturned multiple times and came to rest in the parking lot of a gas station. Witnesses inside the store rushed outside to assist before emergency responders arrived. One occupant of the gold truck was pronounced dead at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries at Community Regional Medical Center.
Campbell is currently receiving treatment for his injuries at the hospital. Upon his release, he will face charges related to driving under the influence. On Tuesday morning, debris from the crash was still visible at the intersection. Nick Badella, the owner of Kalifornia Kustoms, remarked that such incidents are frequent in the area.
“It happens all the time. Every other week, there’s something occurring at this corner,” Badella stated. He noted that in the two years he has been at this location, he has witnessed numerous accidents. “I have lived in Fresno my entire life, and this is probably the most dangerous intersection I have ever encountered,” he added.
Last year, Fresno police reported four accidents at this intersection that resulted in injuries. In 2023, there were also four crashes, while the previous year saw six incidents. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the deceased men as they continue to notify their families.
