Ja’Morius Mitchell Obituary, Death;- Sugar cane farmers investigating a fire in their field discovered the body of an 18-year-old, Ja’Morius Mitchell, who had been shot and concealed beneath cut plant material, according to Louisiana authorities.
Three individuals have been apprehended in connection with Mitchell’s murder, which may have stemmed from a dispute over a cell phone, as reported by the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office on January 3. Tyler Davis, aged 18, faces charges of second-degree murder and obstruction of justice following a nearly two-week manhunt. Additionally, 18-year-old Sterling Powell and 23-year-old Devontae Johnson have been charged as principals to second-degree murder and obstruction of justice.
The sheriff’s office stated that on the night of the incident, Powell, Johnson, Davis, and Mitchell were together when they traveled to the site where Mitchell’s body was ultimately found. Davis is alleged to have shot Mitchell twice in the back with a pistol resembling an assault rifle.
Following the shooting, investigators reported that Davis and his two accomplices dragged Mitchell’s body into a drainage ditch and covered it with cut sugar cane. Days later, Davis returned to the scene and ignited a fire, leading to the discovery of the body on December 18, six days after Mitchell was reported missing to the Plaquemine Police Department.
His identity was confirmed through dental records, as stated by the sheriff’s office. Jessica Mitchell, the victim’s mother, expressed her grief to KLFY, saying, “I don’t want anyone else to go through what I’m dealing with. It’s so much violence in our community that people like that just need to be stopped.
Nobody should be hurt. My child, my family, we need justice.” The day following the discovery of Mitchell’s body, investigators located a backpack belonging to Davis, which contained an AR-15 style pistol and a phone. Powell and Johnson were arrested on December 19, while the search for Davis commenced, leading to his arrest on January 3.
