Firefighters responded to a two-alarm blaze at 98-01 101st Avenue in Ozone Park at about 1:40 p.m. Kam Mei Koo, the 93-year-old victim, was discovered on the second level, lifeless and unconscious. She was rushed to the hospital, but she eventually passed away there. Meanwhile, Marie Rodriguez came home from her horrific fire escape on Friday night, still in shock.
Rodriguez claimed, “I was napping when I heard a loud pop three times.” I woke up and immediately began choking. Then I noticed smoke streaming in through the door. Rodriguez went home without knowing the extent of the damage caused by the fire, but she did have her dog Penny, who had been saved by the firefighters.
Officials have speculated that a lithium-ion battery explosion on an electric bicycle is to blame for this latest catastrophic fire. The Fire Marshals Office of the New York City Fire Department examined a burnt bicycle on the street. The man who owns the house is entitled to it.
