Michael Spooner Obituary, Death; – A man has lost his life and his wife has sustained injuries following an incident involving a Route 64 SEPTA bus on Friday evening. The incident occurred shortly before 7 p.m. at the intersection of Front Street and Washington Avenue in the Queen Village area of the city.
Investigators report that the couple was in the process of crossing Front Street within the designated crosswalk when they were struck by the bus, which was executing a westbound turn from Front Street onto Washington Avenue. According to police, a 35-year-old man was pulled beneath the bus. Despite the efforts of officers to administer life-saving measures, they were unable to revive him. On Saturday, the Philadelphia police identified the deceased as Michael Spooner.
“With assistance from what I believe was the victim’s wife, they managed to extricate him from beneath the bus, and the sergeant performed CPR, but unfortunately, it was ineffective,” stated Lt. Gregory Brown from the Philadelphia police’s Crash Investigation Division.
The victim’s 29-year-old wife was transported to Temple University Hospital, where she is reported to be in stable condition.
“Our condolences go out to all those affected by this tragic event. SEPTA is dedicated to fully cooperating with the Philadelphia Police in their investigation of the accident. Additionally, SEPTA’s System Safety Division is conducting its own inquiry into the matter,” SEPTA expressed in a statement to Action News.
“The safety of our riders and the communities we serve remains our highest priority. We are committed to maintaining full transparency with the public as we gather more information from the System Safety investigation,” the statement further elaborated. It remains uncertain how many passengers were aboard the bus at the time of the incident.
Police have indicated that they are reviewing surveillance footage in an effort to gain further insights into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
