Derek Marcus Burpo Obituary, Death; – A pizza delivery driver in Birmingham, Alabama, was tragically shot and killed while making a delivery on New Year’s night, according to police reports.
The Birmingham Police Department received a call around 9 p.m. on Tuesday regarding gunfire on Roebuck Drive, as stated in a post on their Facebook page. Shortly thereafter, a second call was made reporting an individual who had sustained gunshot wounds.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered an unresponsive man on a private road with a gunshot injury. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel subsequently arrived and declared the man deceased, as reported by the police.
USA TODAY reached out to the Birmingham police on Thursday but has yet to receive a reply. Authorities confirmed that their initial investigation revealed the victim was in the midst of a delivery when he was shot. Currently, no suspects are in custody for this incident.
Local news outlets WVTM and WBRC identified the deceased driver as 51-year-old Derek Marcus Burpo from Birmingham, noting that he had been robbed during the incident.
“This is one of the most heart-wrenching homicides we have encountered in our city,” stated Birmingham officer Truman Fitzgerald, according to WBRC. “A man was out on the very first day of 2025, working to support his family, and someone committed the most heinous act possible, robbing a family of their loved one.” Police indicated that they are utilizing their “technological resources” to aid in locating the shooter.
