A driver responsible for killing 10 people and injuring 30 after plowing his vehicle into New Year’s revelers in New Orleans has been preliminarily identified as Shamsud Din Jabbar. Authorities believe Din Jabbar drove a white pickup truck at high speed into a crowd in the French Quarter’s Bourbon Street at 3:15 a.m. on New Year’s Day. The attack ended in a firefight with police, during which Din Jabbar was killed. Two officers were wounded in the exchange.
Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old American citizen born in Texas and a former U.S. Army serviceman, was reportedly wearing full body armor and wielding an assault rifle when he exited the vehicle. According to the FBI, at least one improvised explosive device (IED) was found in the area, while additional explosive devices were discovered in an ice chest inside the truck. A black ISIS flag was seen on the back of the car, leading officials to investigate the attack as a potential act of terrorism.
Grim footage shared on social media shows motionless, bloodied bodies scattered on the ground, with loud bangs that could be gunshots echoing in the background. Witnesses described the chaos, with one woman recounting the truck crashing through barricades and hitting a pedicab passenger. “There were just bodies and the screams.” You can’t un-think or un-hear that.”
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell condemned the act as a “terrorist attack,” while Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill expressed her prayers for the victims, describing the incident as a “brutal, intentional slaughter.” The FBI has taken the lead in the investigation and is working to determine whether Din Jabbar acted alone or had connections to ISIS. Reports suggest four to five others may have assisted him in planning the attack.
