NORTH CAROLINA (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The National Weather Service is surveying storm damage across several local counties following Sunday’s severe weather.
On Dec. 29, 2024, several Tornado Warnings popped up across the state, including Mecklenburg, York, Iredell, Rowan, Gaston, Anson, and Richmond counties.
On Monday, NWS crews will examine storm damage within these tornado warnings to determine whether straight-line winds or tornadoes caused the damage.
In Iredell County, Matthew Ronald Teeple, 70, of Cleveland, was killed when a large tree fell on top of his pickup truck during Sunday’s storms.
“It’s definitely frightening just to be out in a rural area with a lot of trees around you,” said Dustin, who lives in the area. “It’s definitely concerning and especially being right here after the holidays, that’s going to touch a family deeply.”
It was a chillier start Monday morning compared to Sunday. Temperatures were in the 40s across much of the region, with 30s in the mountains. High temperatures will climb into the lower 60s around Charlotte and 50s for the high country Monday afternoon.
Mostly clear skies Monday night will allow temperatures to dip back into the 40s, with potentially a few areas of fog by Tuesday morning.
New Year’s Eve will feature a few scattered showers, mainly during the early afternoon as a cold front passes through.
Despite a few more clouds and shower chances, New Year’s Eve will still have temperatures in the upper 50s and lower 60s. Slightly warmer than average for this time of year.
